For the "reviews + video" template, the main site background images are shown. The featured image is shown as the background only on the "videos" page template and on individual post pages.

...now I remembered...I had also a featured image on the home front page, which contains the trailer (from vimeo). On vimeo I had a thumbnail image assigned, -not visible on the website. This made me add the same thumbnail as a featured image, on the static front page, -but it does not show up.

It is not terrible without it, since the image now shown comes from the header slideshow and fits as well.

I guess it was, because I wanted a featured image behind a video post which was to be shown together with other video posts under a category menu.
Got rid of the featured image again, and it looks fine now.

Still working on it, actually trying to put the supporters logos under the poster credit in the footer, which looked quite messy, so I got rid of it again. This would definitely be feature for an update, -as somebody already mentioned.

Vimeo does not have a very good system for consistently grabbing these images from their servers.

Dear-Molitor-Team,

thank you for this faq - but I´m still facing the problem that none of my shown videos is loading their thumbnail-Image. Although every Video on Vimeo has its own thumbnail picture (choosen directly out of the video or uploaded aswell). If I refresh the project-category-site, most of the videos are getting their images, but not all of them. Why? Is there anything I can do? If I click to the "+" for more projects, it´s the same problem despite you can´t refresh the site->reload starts on the newest project. On mobile screen (iPhone6) it´s even worse: none of the thumbnails of the Vimeo-videos is displayed and if I reload the site, I can see the tumbnails for 1 second than they disapear again.
A similar problem I discovered today on the team-category-site: on mobile screen some team-member-fotos can´t be displayed for some reason. Although all the team-images are located in the mediagallery.

VYSUAL has an automatic thumbnail feature that grabs the thumbnail images from sites like YouTube and Vimeo if a featured image is not assigned for the post.

While this feature may be handy, it is only intended as a temporary measure as sites like YouTube/Vimeo do not have a very good system for grabbing these images. As a result, they sometimes do not display and require a page refresh to try and grab them again from the 3rd party site.

It is highly recommended that all video posts have a designated featured image uploaded and assigned to represent the post.
