After some investigation I figured it out shortly after I posted.

Hi there,

Any images that are uploaded directly from the post edit page get "attached" to that post and display at the top of the post when viewing on the site.

To avoid images getting attached to a post, upload them from the "add media" page (under the "media" menu). Then you can go back to the post and assign featured images by browsing your media library like normal.

Used the featured image in some blog posts and they are all displaying when clicking on the blog post. Looking at your demo, some blog posts have them and some don't.

How do I disable the featured image being displayed on a clicked blog post?
