in the dumbest terms I can put it(not trying to offend sorry if I do)

create a new folder name it child

create a file in the "child" folder name it style.css

paste this without the ''

Theme Name: Zoom Child
Description: Child theme for the zoom theme

Template: zoomchild

@import url("../zoom/style.css");

thats the basics you will now be able to active the child theme via the Appearance panel

now...

any CSS modifications should be done in that new file.

copy the files from the original theme you want to modify code for and paste them in the child folder and start editing

note any files you move will override the original theme files so try not to remove core features(mainly functions etc)

Yeah, I wish I knew about setting up a child theme beforehand. Im sure ill fumble through it.

no worries, just make sure you read the documentation in the codex BEFORE asking questions, depending on the mods though its pretty close to copy and paste(then edit)

@ bigmacg5 most premium themes dont have automatic upgrades because of security reasons

and whenever you customize ANY theme free or premium you want to use a child theme that way it never messes with the core theme files so if the authors update something/fix functionality bugs you can upgrade pretty seamlessly http://codex.wordpress.org/Child_Themes

What do you mean with "child theme"?
Isn't there an automatic theme update like on other themes...?

move all of your modifications to a child theme, other than that you'll have to manually make the changes again(either your modifications or the changed template files)
