Instructions on how to control side bar from menu item.

I followed the instructions but I placed the following script in the footer.php
NOTICE: I had to take out 1 line from the script to get it to work.

I would like to control the open of the sidebar from a menu item. I would like to have an "About" in the menu and once clicked it opens the sidebar to the specific slide. Can you please explain how to do this?
