In general, I recommend using the "text" tab to make edits as the "visual" tab may add additional markup like the p tags unnecessarily.

Never mind, now somehow it stopped doing it. Weird.

Hi, I followed your instructions and fixed the problem. It's been working fine for weeks and now it magically reverted back to adding a <p> tag before my information but now no matter how many times I edited it properly in the visual mode and saved, the <p> tags somehow show up on their own, forcing my text to the second line after the "© 2013 ." Basically, it is forcing the <p> tags to appear in whatever I add.

The custom text in your footer is surrounded by p tags. That's why it's showing on a second line. To prevent p tags, make sure you're using the text tab and not the visual tab of the footer text editor.

Open up "footer.php" and locate the following on line 22...

&copy; <?php echo date("Y "); bloginfo('name'); ?>. <?php echo $footer;?>

You can remove the "&copy; <?php echo date("Y "); bloginfo('name'); ?>." part to only have the text you enter in the theme options show up.
