The best way to do this is to just uncheck the comments box within the page edit screen. You should also be able to deactivate comments from the settings page.

I was able to go into page.php and remove the line "<?php comments_template(); ?>" which removes the "leave a comment" instruction, but now I have a blank box where the comments were supposed to go. Can you help me remove this, please?
