Figured it out! Sorry to spam you – in my testing I had inadvertently put the same image from a single post as the background for my category "all" so it was taking priority over the default background image.

Hi there – sorry, I had change the behaviour of the site and use a static page instead of recent posts (some of the work was going to be featured/linked to from another website starting this morning), so you won't be able to see what I was talking about, however hopefully my description above made more sense than the first time, so you understand what I mean.

The static page is an acceptable solution, but I'd still rather it just load the recent posts and use the site default background image as the background, so if you know a solution that would be wonderful. If not, I'll live ;)

The site is at photo.palegreenstar.com if you want to see what I mean in that second post. It wasn't so much a second item, as opposed to a possible workaround on the first item – the page will load with the "List" tab/square pre-selected instead of the menu square.

But in regards to the first response – I don't have a "header images" in my customize menu. What I do have is a "General" tab where I can set one single default background image – is that what you're referring to? But the issue I'm having is that this image isn't what displays when I set the page to load recent posts. I see the background image from the most recent post instead. (If you want to see that behaviour I'll have to adjust the settings on the backend first, since right now it's set to show you the scenario from the first paragraph.)

Hi there,

The latest post page will show the "header images" you have assigned on the Customize page. WordPress (by default) does not have a featured image option for category/post-listing pages like that, so taking control of the background image for those pages would require custom development.

Regarding the second item, can you provide a link to your page? I'd like to get a better understanding of the issue you're having.

Just to add – if I set the website to load a static page instead of recent posts (in the customize menu), but leave both dropdown menus blank, the website default background loads – which is exactly what I'd like – however the page loads with the list tab pre-selected. Perhaps a solution would be to force the home/menu tab to be pre-selected when the page loads, if this is possible?

Curious if it's possible to set a custom background image on the "Recent Posts" page. So if my page is set to load most recent posts by default, can I set the background to a specific image instead of one associated with the latest post?
