Hi there,

No updates yet as the theme really can't change/alter a 32 bit system (it doesn't have control over how it works). This really is a limitation/fault of the 32 bit system, so it may be something you need to address with your hosting provider.

Let me know if you're able to resolve this with them.

Thanks!

Chris

Has there been any update on this? Currently working on a site that needs to reference 1896 and none of my dates prior to 12/31/1901 are sticking.

Hi howoco,

Thanks for sharing your knowledge here! I wasn't aware that 32 bit systems have this restriction. I'm glad you brought this to my attention.

In my opinion, using the publish date makes the most sense for items used in this context as they are intended to represent a period in history. In this way, the publish date represents the published date of the art work, and utilizes WordPress's built-in date control for displaying/grouping items in a particular order.

I will look into this issue some more as I'm not currently sure what the best approach will be for users with a 32 bit system.

Thanks!

Chris

We've just run into problems using The Curator with post publication dates prior to December 13th 1901. From a quick search around the forums we're clearly not the first.

The problem is a result of Wordpress handling the publication date as a timestamp internally. On 32 bit systems, the range of dates that can be expressed in this way is approximately 1901-2038. We've confirmed that using a 64 bit PHP build fixes the issue.

The problem here is that many, many people use 32 bit platforms. Not only that, a lot of Wordpress users have very limited control over what software versions their hosts deploy. The wide popularity of WP is due in part to its ease of install and wide portability.

Further, hijacking the post publication date in order to provide the functionality of the Timeline is much less than ideal. Publication dates are useful for all sorts of reasons: users shouldn't have to give them up to use your theme.

In short, the date used on the Timeline should be implemented separately from the publication date. You can use PHP 5.3's newer date handling methods to avoid depending on platforms supporting 64 bit integers.
