I already disabled Ajax but it hasn't made a difference.
I question whether this falls under the remit of custom development since what I'm confronting is a general problem. I've tested lightbox enabling with pretty much every lightbox plugin going, but the denominator here is that the theme won't enable any of them after the jump. In every case, the lightbox plugins work on the first five category posts on the first 'page'. So what I'm trying to get to the bottom of here is if there's something inherent in the way Visual loads additional content, that basically *all* plugins won't interact with?

For the record, I would happily use you own 'Zoombox', being the only lightbox plugin I've found that works across the whole site, if it were all box and no zoom. If you issued a version of that lightbox that simply didn't include the zoom function, such that clicking outside of the image closes the lightbox, I'm convinced you would have a lot of happy takers.

Sadly I haven't the budget for custom development.

Issues may arise with JavaScript-based plugins when you're using the AJAX features of this theme. My best suggestion is to disable AJAX if you're having too many issues using plugins that you require.

a consistent difficulty I'm having is with various things loading 'after the jump' on Category driven pages, that is on the second/third/etc load screens, past the first five posts.

First it was Vimeo native thumbnails that wouldn't load. Now I'm finding it a fairly consistent blockade to using various different lightbox plugins (I tried zoombox but it's functionality didn't suit me, sorry).

I know you offer limited support for third party plugins, but I've tried five or six different plugins now, and I'm wondering what it specifically about how the Category sections load(after the first page) that is breaking the cross-site implementation of so many potential functions?

Is it possible to disable the jump? Ie remove the limitation of five posts per category page, so that all load at once? I realise this will slow initial load for the user, but it's just a few thumbnail headers on most of my posts.
