Unfortunately there are no known theme-related issues/explanations for this other than user error, so I can only recommend you double-check how you're creating posts, assigning categories and configuring theme options.

Thank you Chris, I do have the category set right, the problem is getting a new post to show up on the home page. Can you please help with that?

Be sure you have posts assigned to the category you specify on the theme options panel for the slider.
