Hi there,

No updates yet. Sorry.

ThemeForest does have a new standard being applied to the marketplace, so I'll be updating ALL themes very soon. I'm wrapping up a project now and plan to review ALL themes.

Hi there,

I appreciate the feedback. You make a great case here.

This theme did use the wp_enqueue method until jQuery updated the library and caused problems with 3rd party scripts I'm using. In these instances, the quickest fix I can provide my buyers is to hard code the jQuery so the theme still works for them. I have 20+ themes, so going through every 3rd party script and rewriting it to make it jive with a recent release of jQuery is a daunting task (especially when I didn't write the script).

When I can, I do rewrite to make them work with new releases of jQuery, but some are more difficult to fix than others. I will mark this thread "pending review" so I can research this more and review the script used in this theme.

Thanks!

Chris

Hi Chris, I've submitted a contact form to Mary Lou, the slider developer at tympanus.net. I'm not holding my breath on getting a reply considering that it's a free script. At this point in time, I've come the conclusion that it's really your responsibility to correct the problem if you consider the following:

1. The functionality of Daily Press relies on Mary Lou's COMPACT NEWS PREVIEWER WITH JQUERY script which is a freebie.

2. All indications are that this script has been hard coded and therefore does not follow Wordpress best practice: see http://codex.wordpress.org/Function_Reference/wp_enqueue_script for more information. And it is in fact the lack of this compliance that is causing the issue with the WebCam viewer plugin that I need to use.

3. The functionality and quality of your Daily Press theme is thrown into doubt if users cannot use jQuery plugins into the future because Daily Press isn't following best practice.

While I understand that you don't offer plugin support, I don't believe that situation is relevant in this case. I'm sure you would want your themes to follow Wordpress best practice, both for the benefit of your customers and for your continued good reputation as a theme developer?

b.t.w your alliance with Werkpress is useless, I still haven't had a response from them.

I need to progress this so I'd to talk with the developer for the home page slider script that you use in The Daily Press to see if he/she can assist. Can you supply an email/contact please?

Hi there,

I'm referring to the Daily Press slider script. It requires jQuery 1.5.1.

Unfortunately I don't provide plugin support, so you'll need to submit a customization request to add additional functionality to the theme: http://themolitor.com/custom

Hi Chris, Your two last replies seem contradictory to me, I'm probably not understanding you correctly. In answering, can you please specify if you're talking about the Daily Press Slider that you use for the front page functionality and the Webcam Image Handler slider plugin that I'm wanting to implement.

Is there any chance that either you or the slider developer will update the Daily Press Slider that you use for the front page functionality? At this point in time I've purchased and built two sites with the Daily Press theme. But I'm concerned that if this essential part of your theme isn't updated, then I'll likely have further problems down the track trying to implement plugins written with more modern versions of jQuery. Please outline your thoughts and intentions as it will affect my decision making now and in the future.

I'm at a point where I need some real guidance from you please. If your answer is basically no and that's the jQuery version your front page slider will stay at, then can you recommend a slider that will play properly with your theme? It must allow me to pull in jpegs automatically ftp'd from an ip camera into the wordpress image folder and to then display the most recent image (on page load) while still allowing the user to scroll back through previous images and it must work across all devices?

Cheers

Hi there,

The sliding script used in this theme appears to require jQuery 1.5.1, which is currently being used. As we've learned, recent releases of jQuery break this script, so changing jQuery currently is not an option.

Thanks!

Hi Chris, I'm a bit confused!

Which jQuery version was in Daily Press version 1.0.1?
Was the jQuery version upgraded when I upgraded from Daily Press version 1.0.1 to Daily Press version 1.2.3?
Which jQuery is in the current Daily Press version 1.2.3?
What jQuery version do I need to install to correct the issue and how do I do that?

Cheers

Hi there,

This theme uses some 3rd party jQuery scripts to achieve certain effects. One of the scripts creates the slider effect on the home page for each category section. If changing the header items caused this slider feature to break, it's likely because the script was written for jQuery 1.5.1 ( which was the current version at the time).

The recent releases of jQuery must have changed some of the methods used by these scripts, causing them to break.

Hope that explains why 1.5.1 is required.

Thanks!

Hi Chris, ok I've updated to the latest Daily Press version. I then modified header.php by removing the two lines as suggested. It caused the same issue on the front page, no posts loading into their respective categories. This was the same whether or not the cam plugin was enabled or not. As soon as I reinstated the two lines of code it was ok.

Any ideas?

Hi there,

I recommend you use the latest version of the theme regardless, but you can try opening "header.php" and remove the following on lines 92-93...

wp_deregister_script('jquery');
wp_register_script('jquery', ("https://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.5.1/jquery.min.js"), false, '');

Hi, I've installed the 'Outerbridge Webcam Image Handler for WordPress' in order to display jpegs that are ftp'd from two ip cameras. When the two instances of this plugin are running (they run correctly), the news posts on the front page won't load into their respective categories. The plugin developer had a look at it for me and states: "jQuery and JavaScript in WordPress should be enqueued in order to work properly, see http://codex.wordpress.org/Function_Reference/wp_enqueue_script for more information.

The Daily Press theme doesn't do this.

I switched the theme to TwentyTwelve briefly - TwentyTwelve is the default WP theme and handles jQuery correctly and the webcams work just fine".

I'm running an older version of Daily Press (V 1.0.1) would an upgrade to the latest version solve this problem?

Cheers
