Once I added the target="_blank" to the footer file, and added the Custom Link information, everything worked.

I'm getting old and senile. I thought I tried that.

Yes, I can put a URL in the Custom Link field, and that will take the user to the sponsor's web site.

Now I just want it to open a new tab. Something like the following in the Custom Link field should work, but it's not there yet.

Be sure to use the "Custom Link" field on the post edit screen to customize the link for sponsor posts.

Thanks, we're making progress. Adding the target="_blank" to the front of the line of code did make it open a new tab, but it's to the Post.
I'm hoping to open a new tab for the sponsor's web site if somebody clicks on the footer image.

When adding a Post, I have selected the Sponsor Category and added a Feature Image so it shows up in the footer. In addition I have included my sponsor image inside the Post. Once the image is in the post, I edit it and add a Link URL to the sponsor's web site, and under the Advance Settings, used the Open Link in new window option.. All of that works.

I was looking for a Link URL and Open Link in new window feature for the Featured Image that shows up in the footer,

Does all of this make sense?

For sponsors, open up footer.php and change the following on line 20 from this...

<a href="<?php  if ($data[ 'custom_link' ]) { echo $data[ 'custom_link' ];} else { the_permalink(); } ?>">

...to this...

<a target="_blank" href="<?php  if ($data[ 'custom_link' ]) { echo $data[ 'custom_link' ];} else { the_permalink(); } ?>">

For the alert box, just be sure your a tag has target="_blank" in it like this...

<a target="_blank" href="URL-TO-SITE">Link text here</a>

When user click on the Sponsor image on the front page, I would like to open the sponsor's web site in a new tab. I would also like to open a new tab when people click on the alert box. How can I do this?
