You could try using the Display Widgets plugin to customize widgets to only appear on certain pages.

I would like to modify the news category pages with some graphic customizations at the top of item lists. These would be graphic representations (small benners) of columns, etc.

I'm aware of some of the options available to approach this using the two sidebars on the right of the page.

Is there a way to further customize the current theme category pages? Or do you advice that I recreate the category pages as new custom category pages using more specific column and text control?

I appreciate your thoughts.
