Thanks Chris!, but I do want to use the gallery template. I tried adding the code to page_gallery.php
<div id="contentBox" class="boxStuff<?php if(!is_front_page()){?> activeBox<?php }?>">
as in page.php, but it still does not work.
Is there a simple script alteration in functions or custom.js which I can do to have the menu panel always automatically slide open?

Just don't use the gallery page template and it should work the way you want.
