Just one last thing to add. I went back and changed your code from "Directions" to "Get Directions" as I just like the way that looks a little better.

It functions perfectly though. Thanks!

You have to manually enter them in each post *anyway* ... but only once as usual. It will then pull it from any normal post with an existing lat/long.

What this will do is force all Get Directions requests to use lat/long instead of the address. Since all entries have an accurate lat/long anyway, this shouldn't be a problem.

Ok thanks ivovic...got that piece of code and will mess with it later today.

Will this actually "pull" the lat/long from the post entry, or will it require manually entering them in each post?

Pasting code here doesn't work...

please see this link: http://pastie.org/3737234

should work, but I haven't tested it. If nothing else it should give you a starting point.

ivovic, was studying what you suggested and it brought up another question. Would it be possible to insert code into the single.php that would automatically grab the lat/long from the theme post and insert it as needed?

thanks for the tip...I'm not much of a coder, but I'll take a look and see if I can find the spot to insert it.

See my edit above. This is the same link which is used by the theme, meaning that you should be able to get what you want by editing single.php

Mine is heavily customised, so I can't tell you the line number, but if you search for 'maps.google.com' in single.php you will find the line.

that's an interesting thought ivovic, but I don't think we have any way to control the way Google Maps does "it's thing."

That would solve the problem if it were possible though.

I don't know enough about the API, but I just tired putting [lat],[long] into the google maps website as a destination, and get directions works fine, so I imagine it might be possible to just specify it instead of an address.

Edit: I just formatted the link properly, and this is what you get.

http://maps.google.com/maps?daddr=33.784872,-84.405840

Note: Lat/Long is for a restaurant in Atlanta, I just happened to have it handy.

Hi there,

The reason the address is used for the get directions feature is because of the way the get direction URL works. To my knowledge, the URL that links to the page only works with a street address.

You might have some luck looking around the Google maps API site to see if there's a better way to provide a URL to get directions: https://developers.google.com/maps/

Thanks!

Chris

I have an issue that I hope has a solution. It's relatively minor, but I'd prefer to make the mapping as accurate as possible.

The locations in this city have no street numbers, so when I enter the street name with no number, the "get directions" function just finds the street and not the targeted spot. I can manually adjust the location on the map, but it makes the process less "user friendly."

Is there a way to display the street name in the post details but have the lat/long. control the "get directions" location?

My guess is that it is a Google Maps issue, and nothing can be done, but some of you folks are pretty crafty, and maybe there is a work-around for the problem.
