HTML markup is not supported in the titles for WordPress posts/pages. You can apply italic styling to the entire title by adding some CSS to the Custom CSS box on the Customize page. For example, to make the post titles on the home page italic, you can add something like this...

.cn_content h2 {font-style: italic;}
