Image files need to be adjusted in image editors like Photoshop, etc.

Once you have an adjusted image, simply replace the current file in the theme images directory (header_tile.png).

The black area is actually part of a tiled background image. You can adjust the image file to make changes.

How do you remove the black background behind this as well?

Obviously removing this..

.. gets rid of the clock, and search, but not the black background behind them.

Having a hard time using the developer tools to see where it is in the css. Thanks for your help!

That's the code you need to remove for the date, so if you still see it, try clearing your browser cache (or plugin cache?).

Regarding the search box, remove the following on line 52 in header.php...

<div id="searcher"><?php  get_template_part('searchform'); ?></div>
