Looks like this is a larger customization as the thumbs are required for the main image to display like that.

I did that, but what it does is taking the picture completely out, blank screen.

On the Customize page (appearance > customize), there's a Custom CSS section. Copy/paste the above CSS into the box available there.

I got the plug-in to create custom CSS per page and when I entered the code you sent me nothing happened. It's still showing the thumbs and slide show

Try adding the following to your Custom CSS box on the Customize page...

body.home #mainTimer,
body.home a.thumbsToggle,
body.home #controls,
body.home #thumbs {display: none !important;}
