The Root Directory in your FTP program is the folder that has files wp-admin,wp-content, wp-includes. Add/replace your favicon.ico to that one.

The header can be found and modified in the Appearence>Edit Themes (sidebar)> Header (in Blue).

This line worked for me:

<link rel="shortcut icon" type="image/x-icon" href="/favicon.ico">

I know this post is old, but you make your favicon.ico and place it in your Root directory... you will know if it is in the correct place if you goto....

http://www.yoursite.com/favicon.ico

Your icon should display at this adress (obviously replace yoursite with your webaddess)

Next - you need to go and edit your header.php doc... or wherever your header is... go and edit it to add this line
Input the below code below <header> line tag in your header..

You should put the favicon.ico in your main directory, it shouldn't have anything to do with your theme. Did you do this?

My question : How can I put a favicon ? I'm trying to upload a file called "favicon.ico" everywhere but it doesn't work...
