The "additional category timeline options" does not pertain to dividing the timeline by category. It refers to the ability to select which categories have the timeline layout (as opposed to the default grid layout for categories). This is made available on the Customize page.

If you want to divide your timeline by category, you would still need to perform the user edit posted above.

Hi there,

1. In the example above, you change the "meta_key" value ("custom-field-name" in the example) to a value you want to use.

2. I'm referring to asking the user who posted the instructions for clarification as this is not a theme option.

Looking at the code he provided, yes, it's only changing the post order, but you can ask there for clarification.

To be clear this is only sorting the timeline by a category and not replacing the date with a category name correct.

From user robinlayfield:

CHANGING TIMELINE TO SORT BY CUSTOM FIELD

The query that the Timeline uses can be changed to sort by custom field, like this:

index.php: line 21, change from this:

$wp_query->query('order='.$timelineOrder.'&cat='.$timelineMain.'&showposts=2000');

to this:

$wp_query->query( 'meta_key=custom-field-name&orderby=meta_value_num&order='.$timelineOrder.'&cat='.%timelineMain.'&showposts=2000');

and replace custom-field-name with whatever the custom field is called

Make sure you edit all your timeline posts to set the appropriate custom field for them.
