The theme doesn't have any server requirements as it only is in charge of displaying content provided by WordPress. The issue you have is not being able to change WordPress settings. The theme doesn't have anything to do with this.

Just to clarify, this is not a theme-based restriction or an issue caused by the theme. The theme only displays and organizes content created by WordPress. If you're unable to make changes to WordPress settings, that is something either caused by WordPress or by your hosting provider. Those are pretty old posts (5 years old), but I did see a response that says:

"Before PHP 5.1.0, negative timestamps were not supported under any known version of Windows and some other systems as well. Therefore the range of valid years was limited to 1970 through 2038."

Sounds like maybe you're using an older version of PHP. You can confirm this with your hosting provider if you're not sure how to check. If that's the case, they might be able to upgrade your server.

With the default installation used, did not let me use dates before 1970.

I can change the date on the post, but not accepting it.

If I put 1850 automatically changes it to 1970.

If you're using the default theme with no edits, all you have to do is edit the publish date to determine the age of the post on the timeline.
