Yes, you assign a gallery page (page using the gallery page template) as the static home page from the "reading" settings page.

Is it possible to get the homepage to always start at the "collapsed version" of the homepage - with only the icon-buttons on the side? It would be great to see a fullsize bacground image first and than press the home icon to see the full menu with the split screen (background-picture/menu- colorblock), and not the other way around as you now have to click on the home icon button to collapse the menu to see the backround image.
