That was it. I never assigned at category for the slider in the customized section.

Be sure that you (1) have a category assigned for the slider on the Customize page and (2) the posts do not have that slider category assigned on the post edit page.

Ok, I hadn't published the new post, so I did. However the new post shows up to the left of slider. The category does show in the customized page and I can add it to the tab section under slider. How do I prevent the post from showing to the left of the slider?

Oh, gotcha. Do you have published posts in that category? Categories only display if there are published posts assigned to them.

Where are you trying to add posts? The slider area? The tabbed section?

The slider area uses a single category, which is controlled on the Customize page. If you don't have a category assigned, all posts will display.

The tabbed section has multiple categories that are controlled on the Customize page.

I am now being asked to add a new item under the slider. All of the links to the left of the slider are using the "slider" category. The items under the slider each have their own category name. When I add a new item (post), the links to the left of the slider get populated instead of below the slider.

Also is there a way to control the order of the links below the slider?

Just to clarify, are you wanting to add posts to the list/tab section below the slider/header area? If so, just be sure that you have your posts properly categorized. The slider area should be populated by one category (i.e. "slider", "featured", etc.) while the tab section should be another group of categories.
