Ha! Thanks I learned something new today. Didn't think to look in archive.php thinking it was for old posts.

Worked like a charm. Added the code in same spot and solved

<p><?php the_excerpt(); ?> </p>

Category pages are controlled from the archive.php page template. I would start there to make edits for categories.

Chris - Small question - it works for the front page but when the posts are within a category blog the excerpt doesn't show. Tried adding the code into the different page .php layouts without success. Ideas on making it show within the category or if ?

Update: in 3.5.2 add this to functions.php

function custom_excerpt_length( $length ) {
return 20;
}
add_filter( 'excerpt_length', 'custom_excerpt_length', 999 );

Hi Chris -

Don't mean to hijack the thread, if you need me to start a new one I will. Came across this persons questions as I head the same one. My blogs look empty without the excerpt. I haven't made any template changes, so there is nothing customized.
My reading settings of either Full/Summary do not show anything further.

Hi there,

The only built-in way to display posts on the home page is to use the default home page in the theme. Anything else would have to be a static page (as you mentioned) or a custom page template that isn't included.

Have you made any edits to the template files or did you make a custom page template to show posts on the home page?

Okay i just thought of an alternative... would it work better if just created a Blog Template page and used that and left the Settings > Reading alone? thanks.

I do not want to leave the settings page so that posts are on the Front page. My site is not designed to work like that - most of my sites are not designed to work like that.

In Settings > Reading I have the static settings set so that the Front Page= Home and Posts page = Events.

I've done this with just about every site i've developed and have not come across this issue of excerpts not showing. Is there no way to fix this? thank you.

Hi there,

You shouldn't need to touch the settings page. The theme has posts display on the home page by default.

Nothing was removed in any of the updates, so I'm not quite sure how/why the excerpt isn't showing. Please make sure you leave the settings page set to it's default setup.

Regarding the categories, if you have the 3 columns setup, the posts always show in the middle. The widgetized sidebards ONLY display the widgets you specify on the widgets page.

In Settings I set up the Events page (http://www.staindy.org/church/events/)to be the posts/blog page and after I updated to the newest Aid version today the individual blocks for each post are showing title and date info. There is no excerpt content showing. Which php file do i add <?php the_excerpt(); ?>?

Also, i can't remember how to choose which categories show on a page in the middle column versus the widgetized sidebars.
