Hi Amy,

Oh good! I'm just glad you got this thing working and it didn't require a complete restart :-)

Thanks for following up and providing details about what happened and what you did to fix it. I'm positive you'll save other users A LOT of headache.

I hope you enjoy using/working with the theme. Please don't forget to rate it on your downloads page when you get the chance. It REALLY helps!

Hi Chris. You'll be happy to know that I found the problem and fixed my Home Slider. Sadly, it was definitely self-induced. At 4am this morning I decided to try deleting the posts associated with the Home Slider and rebuild them, and it started working. In the process of deleting them, I noticed that one of them had it's picture disconnected (i.e. the picture was not associated with that post anymore). At that point, I remembered that I had been cleaning up some duplicate pictures in my media library and that apparently is one of the files I had deleted. Ugh! All this because I tried to organize my media mess!

Sorry for all the confusion, and thank you for your support! (By the way, Dreamhost gave me exceptional support trying to track down a database error).

So I guess the one take-away from this is that if the picture is missing from one of your slider posts, it will cause the entire slider to stop working.

When you told me to check my theme options and category names, I didn't think to look to see if the pictures were actually still embedded in the post. Great lesson learned. I hate user errors (especially when I'm the user)!

Thanks,
Amy

Hi there,

Hmm... unfortunately the database-side of WordPress goes a bit beyond my knowledge (I got this step from the OptionTree support forums). I'm not exactly sure what impact installing the OptionTree plugin has on the database when OptionTree is built into the theme.

The best recommendation I have at this point is to create a new database/WordPress install as installing the plugin seems to have caused an issue I'm not sure how to fix.

Let me know if that works.

Thanks!

Hi Chris - OK, so I emptied the Option Tree table but it did nothing. Then I tried emptying the Options table and it made my website totally unavailable (DATABASE CONNECTION ERROR). Thankfully, I had made copies of both tables, so I was able to restore. I also tried deleting just the line items in the Option Tree table for Map and Home Slider, but that did nothing. I also tried completely deleting ("dropping") the Option Tree table but that also did nothing. I double checked and I definitely do not have an Option Tree plug-in anymore and all my other plug-ins are still deactivated. My database tables are both restored back to how they were earlier today.

What next?

Thanks!

Hi Chris - The techs at DreamHost walked me through the process of using MyPHPAdmin to access my Options Table but they said I had a choice to select ALL or choose individual rows to delete. Am I choosing ALL? I'm assuming Empty is the same thing as Delete All?

Also, I notice there's an Options Table as well as an Option Tree Table. When I browsed the Option Tree table, it contained lines related to map and slider, not the Options Table. Is it definitely the Options Table I should empty (meaning ALL) or the Option Tree Table or both?

Thanks!

Hi there,

Unfortunately the process is different for every hosting provider. I recommend contacting your hosting provider as they should be able to provide you instructions for your particular setup.

Again, I apologize for having to deal with the database stuff. I wish I could have avoided users having to deal with anything like that, but unfortunately didn't really have a choice.

Hope you understand.

Hi there,

Unfortunately the developer of the OptionTree plugin updated the plugin and made HUGE changes that caused older versions to break. It was a MAJOR headache, but I had to completely redo how the theme options functioned and decided to make OptionTree built into the theme to avoid future disasters like that.

As a result, updating from a version of the theme that required the plugin to be installed requires users to delete the plugin and possibly empty the wp-options table in their database (using the phpMyAdmin tool).

I realize that's a lot of work to apply an update, but I really had no choice as older versions of the plugin were basically abandoned by the developer.

Hope you understand. I totally share your frustrations regarding updating the theme.

Thanks!

Hi there,

What version of the theme are you using? The OptionTree plugin hasn't been required since version 1.2.0 (current version of the theme is 1.2.2). Please make sure you're using the latest version of the theme (available on your downloads page).

Some troubleshooting steps to take before going deeper...

1. Please deactivate ALL plugins when troubleshooting possible causes.

2. Please double-check your theme options settings and make sure you have properly assigned posts to the category you specify for the slider.

3. If you have made edits, please undo those to make sure you didn't cause any issues with your customizations.

4. Lastly, please let me know if the slider stopped working after making a WordPress update. If so, did it work before the update?

Hi there,

Have you installed any additional plugins? If so, try deactivating those to make sure they aren't the cause.

Also, have you made any edits to the template files? If so, please undo those edits to make sure they aren't the cause.

Things like this never just happen randomly. They are always the result of a change somewhere. Have you recently updated anything? Theme? Plugins?

If you provide a link to your site I'll take a closer look.

Chris
