Right. Didn't realise you needed to enter a lat/long to display the KML. That's sorted, it's showing the KML, almost everything is peachy!

@TarasTravel - I'm using the full url to the KML - http://nav.hjaltlandnetwork.com/kml/varangian.kml in my test case.

Nope, sorry. Mark that one down to poor use of copy and paste. Honestly, some days I shouldn't be allowed out. Working for normal posts, still not displaying KML layers but it's only a matter of time.

Furthermore, removing the customisation didn't fix the problem for the existing posts!

Followed the steps indicated - no sign of errors - but now all posts are showing with just a plain gray background whether they have a KML file or not.

Hi Hans, I followed all the steps that you've mentioned, unfortunately kml layer is still not being displayed. I think there is something wrong with the kml-path. How exactly should it be added?

First time poster here ... many thanks to the Molitor for this theme and Hans for figuring out how to enable KML layers.

My question is how do I get the labels in the KML file to display? I downloaded a KML file on California Missions and it displays fine but the names are not showing on the map. Loaded into Google Earth the same file shows the mission icons and the names of the individual missions.

@ivonic can I just clarify this as I just want to be sure that I have this right. You have several categories and each category as several posts the kml shows a route between each post.

So category south west bus stops (has 200 bus stops)
KML Layer shows the 200 bus stops all joined by the route marker presumably the order defines the start and finish. When you click on bus stop 5 it shows the details of that stop without the kml layer to go back you use the browser back button to return to the category.

Is this how it works?

Hans, I understand you're adding markers via KML, but I've been implementing the KML on a category map, so that each marker is a wordpress post in that category. The KML just allows me to connect them logically.

Sounds like that's what you want to do as well.

Great to hear it helped you :) It indeed is good for showing routes. That's what I missed in this theme.
Now I only want to have tooltips like the ones on the main page, for all markers added in a KML, but I guess that's harder to achieve.

Thank you so much for this. I've implemented it for category views to show the route from one point to another. Now there's some visual logic to all the points of interest on the map.

Just some info:
- I have modded post layout and i have set the gallery tab open by default;
- If u have 1 only image (featured image for example) the gallery tab vanish and the description tab was open by default
- I have add a link to "give direction info" directly as tab (visible only if the address was set)
- I have implemented code to have different zoom for each category
- I have removed the Business POI from google map
- I have implemented a custom version of post mash to set the center of the map controllable ( by default the map set the center on last article posted )
- I have implemented a lot of css code to have the icons on main menù

First in the function.php file, go to line 205 and find this code:

Next

This will give you a new box in the admin panel in posts/pages entry screens, where you can ad the full URL to the kml file. So this is including http:// and .kml at the end. Oh, and I found out that using paths that contain spaces don't work. So please give your kml file a filename without space.

Then, you need to add some code to the actual map, so that the kml will be loaded into the single post pages.

In the file single.php, find the following bit of code starting at line 159:

That now should load the KML-layer provided in the post or page entry screen.

There are some things I need to clarify as well:
1. If you don't provide a KML path (so leave the whole path empty) then it will show the post as normal (1 marker at the given latitude and longitude), together with the zoom level specified.
2. If you provide a KML layer, the zoom level will be overruled, and the KML will be shown completely. The zoom level could be a bit of a problem, especially when you use it with the zoom-buttons in the bottom bar of this theme. I solved this by removing those buttons from the admin panel > appearance > theme options. And enable scroll zoom instead (as explained a few posts above this one).
3. If your KML-path is not correct, the post will show without a map, a completely grey page, only with the post description/gallery etc in the floating window on top of it. If you see this, then check your KML-path.

The scrolling is very simple to achieve. When you want this to happen on both the overview map and the single posts, you need to change three files:

script.php
script_list.php

In every file the changes are the same:

Thanks for the nice compliment. I've been working hard to get it adjusted the way I want it to look.

I will definitely try the child theme before any updates to the theme come along. sounds like the way to go with it.

Those sliding boxes are impressive. You sure it's a plugin or did he do some tweaking of the code to make that work?

Your site looks really nice, I like it.

The thing with the child theme is really cool, especially that I am looking forward to updates of The Navigator.
What you could do is create your child theme, and than paste your entire current copy of style.css into the child. This way, you could get the updates (if any... I'm waiting since months...!), but would not loose your work. Ok, maybe you'd have to change some things in the child in order to get the updates rolling, as they would be most probably overwritten by the child.

It's not difficult to make one; I did it pretty fast, and I'm not an expert, as you could figure out so far for yourself :)
Backup is something I always worry about... I haven't done it yet, as I did not figure out how to do it, so far.

I did not find the plugin so far, but I'd really love those on my site too.

Actually, I don't know much about "child themes" yet. Just read something about them the other day. Sounds like a smart way to go to protect all the changes made to the code.

I'm not sure what I'll do when a theme upgrade comes along. Maybe just skip it. I do back up my entire site regularly though - just in case disaster strikes.

It would take me forever to redo all the changes I have made so far just to get the site looking the way I would like for it to look.

Wasn't very difficult.

go to "edit" and do this in all three of these files:

script.php, script_list.php, single.php

Look for

scrollwheel:false

and change it to

scrollwheel:true

Seems to function ok (so far), but as always it is
best to make a back up before changing any code.

I've been going through all the code and tried several things, and I can say that now it works for me.
If for example you'd look at the following page: http://www.ourtrips.nl/148/malta-2
Then you see that the KML layer gets loaded.

Also, I made this dynamically, by adding a new Metabox at the post/page entry in the admin-panel, where a path to the kml-file can be given.

Now I only have two questions, which you maybe can help me with.

1. For the posts that I have a kml-layer, I would like to hide the marker image of that post. But I can't delete it completely from the post, because it still needs to show up on the 'overview' map.

2. I have read of google maps restriction of using bigger icons in KML's than 32px. But maybe you know a way to get past it, as the icons I use now are slightly bigger and get blurred when scaled down.
